Permit Requirements
Permits are required any time you build a new deck or patio, or when you enlarge or make any structural alterations to an existing deck or patio.
In order to obtain a permit, the following items are needed:
- Permit Application Form (PDF) completed
- Site plan showing the following:
- Lot dimensions
- House placement
- Easements
- Building setbacks from lot lines and easements
- Deck setbacks from lot lines and easements
- Building plan showing the following:
- Floor plan with:
- Proposed deck or patio size
- Decks- size and spacing of floor joists
- Decks- size and type of decking material
- Decks- size, type, location, and spacing of posts
- Decks- size and type of beams
- Elevation plan with:
- Decks- height of structure from grade
- Decks- size and depth of footings
- Decks- guard height and spacing (if any)
- Decks- stairway rise/run and handrail height (if any)
- Decks- clearance of over-head wires (if applicable)
- Effective January 1, 2016, The Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code Appendix B contains design specifications for decks. Decks constructed to that Code are considered compliant. Any alterations or modifications outside Appendix B must be done through structural analysis and submitted to the City of Verona for review and approval.
